Damon,

Your real training starts the first day you teach a class and your best trainers will be your students.
General » I am looking for my replacement to teach middle school

Part-time job opportunity: Yes

Living standards: Pretty low.

NOTE: I am Canadian so equal opportunity is a BIIIIGGGG thing. However, the school hopes I can find a coloured person to replace me.

Hi Daniel,

I just want to remind you that teaching experience does not always mean 'classroom' teaching experience. Summer camp counseling, coaching kids hockey or anything similar can be taken as experience. It only requires some knowledge on how to highlight your accomplishments while doing those.

I worked at Mianzhu Experimental Middle School for 2 years but on September 2014 requested my employer-agency for a transfer to a high school.

The said school did not like the replacement(s) sent by the agency to them and now they are asking me for help to find my replacement. I can't get back there because I am still on contract till February 2016 at another institution.

Now I need to find a teacher:
- who may not be experienced but not necessarily very young
- a degree is required because Sichuan Province only issues work permit to degree holders
- IMPORTANT: must be approachable and friendly toward the admin and fellow teachers.
-IMPORTANT: must have genuine love for teaching and for the children's well-being.
-IMPORTANT: must not be teaching solely 'for the business' but one who understands that for the good of the children, are willing to make little sacrifices like talking and chatting and exchange pleasantries with the students fore or after class.

The school:

Located at a small town about the size of Ottawa
Clean air because it is not a manufacturing town
Cool air because of high mountains 20 kms away
A farm and orchard-land in the heart of Sichuan Province to farm fresh vegetables and tree-ripened fruits abound

School provides furnished accommodation including kitchen
Apartment is walking distance to school
Admin and fellow teachers a bit shy but extremely friendly
Easy schedule of only 14 classes per week (45 minutes each)
Very helpful teacher who coordinates with foreign teacher
An hour away from capital city of Chengdu
Opportunities for part-time classes
Choice of getting Working Visa before coming to China (a bit lengthy process) OR come with Tourist Visa then obtain Chinese Working Visa in Hong Kong or any other nearby Asian city like Singapore or Bangkok or Manila or Jakarta...

General » What Foreign Land-bound, New TESOL Grads Need to KNow
Hi Everyone,
I just want to share with you some ideas which may help you in your chosen path.

1. In 99.9% of cases, you will be assigned to teach Oral (Spoken) English. The three other skills are usually handled by local English teachers.

2. Rarely does the school provide you with teaching materials including visual aids. Some schools have their printing room for when you need photocopies of your lessons.

3. Usually, you will be provided a copy of the textbook they are using for their Writing, Listening and Reading BUT you have to know these are useless if your goal is for your learners to learn Effective English Communication.

4. A few of the schools (usually those with a good number of local English speaking teachers) will require you to write and submit lesson plans.

5. Most schools know what they want: Their students must learn effective English communication BUT they don't know how it is to be taught. Their local teachers know and teach "Hello, how are you?" "I'm fine thank you, and you?". When you answer the students, "Well, I'm okay ", you can hear them gasp and see their jaw drop.

6. Very few school admin know what Effective English Communication is made out of OR how to deliver then lessons.

So, as a preparation, make sure to get a copy of Ms Judy Thompson's 'English is Stupid'. It is lightweight (a set of three including a workbook) and with just this book, you could accomplish your purpose of teaching ESL. It starts with Phonetics (not that hated IPA by the way) emphasizing that 'English is NOT spoken the way it is written'. Then Words and Word Stress, then Sentences, then Expressions. The last chapter is on non-verbal communication which I doubt you will get to use except when you are teaching university advanced classes.

The goal here is to understand native speakers and to be understood by native speakers.

I have created a 170-page course book, 'Unlocking the Secrets to Effective English Communication'. If you are in China, I can send you a copy. It follows the pattern of Ms Thompson's book but I added more from my research including exercises. My school asked me to create a workbook based on this and have printed it for use in my classes this school year.

Try to create an account with seriousteachers.com. Most hiring companies and schools are of good report but you still need to do some research on your own. Find forums where there is a discussion about the specific school/company.

In North America, we are always advised to create a short CV but in Asia, they don't mind long ones for as long as it sells you well. If you include online courses, don't indicate they were taken online...hiring agencies/schools sometime treat online courses as second class. Also, if you did some volunteer work, don't indicate that it was volunteer because in their vocabulary, volunteering means you are no good for a paid job.
