I have been teaching in Northern China now for the last 5 years and have generally had good experiences. However, with this year being an Olympic year here, the police/gov't have taken it upon themselves to assert their authority over the foreigners here in Daqing. Visa changes-from multi-entry to single entry, only extending visas until after the Olympics and not full year ones, etc. The police here seem very paranoid that the foreigners will do something to disrupt the torch relay when it comes through here on the 15th.of July. Some schools have been told that we will not be welcome to participate in the relay as spectators. The teachers have had no official word yet,but some of us are expecting it. When we leave our city we have to tell our school, then they tell the police. Many of us have been here for many years and I myself have taken a wife here,so I am committed to China. Some teachers here have been harrassed by the police for taking pictures of common market areas and we have a feeling of being watched and followed. I have had 3 run-ins with the police lately and there is alot of anti-western feelings here amongst the people. The so-called "friendly Chinese" feelings have been put aside for the Olympics over paranoid fears. If you are planning on coming to China for the Olympics,be careful-you are being watched.Dino; a 2000 TESOL graduate.
