Older Graduates

Hello,

I recently completed my 120 hour TESOL certification.

I have been using GTC's website to apply for available
positions.

I am 56 years old. Many employers will tell me outright
I am too old to apply. Some employers will drop the ball
once I forward them a copy of my US passport, since
it bears my date of birth.

Are their any other grads out there that are experiencing
the same problem. If so, please add your comments
to this post. Thanks!!
Hello, Matthew. I'm 48. I completed my Advanced TESOL Diploma about a year ago. I'm now living in Colombia. For me, age hasn't been an issue at all. The bigger problem has been lack of experience. However, I've worked for two different institutions, by the hour, since I've been here; as well as having private students in my home. In July, I'll begin my first fulltime contract (salary) position with British College, a leading language institute here. Keep trying. There are a lot of employers who won't give a second thought about your age, especially if you are going to teach adults.
Hello Terry,

Thank you for input. I finished my advanced TESOL
certificate on 4/30/12. I hold advanced degrees in
Business Admin., and desire to teach adults.

Again, Terry, thank you....

Hey Guys!
I really don't think age is the problem, with me its the fact that most places are looking for a Bachelors Degree, i have my Advanced Diploma in TESOL and every-time i've applied for jobs i've been told that its not enough.

Frustrated!

Hello Nicole,

Thank you for your input!! I assume you have a BA
degree with the Advanced Diploma in TESOL.

I have no problem in the education area; I hold
a BA degree and an MBA and DBA degrees.

Again, Nicole, thank you for your input and best of
luck to you!!!

Matt
