Ah ha!

Forgot to mention! Income Tax (salaries over 120K per year only)

Shenzhen
16000 - 13% income tax = 13, 920
13,920 - 5000 rent and bills = 8920 net

Zhuhai
7000 - no taxes = 7000
Rent and bills paid by school = 7000 net (and everything is cheaper in Zhuhai than it is in SZ)

Hi Anthony,

Dont appreciate being called a liar- no need for the personal attack. I am speaking from personal experience.

I dont have a teaching degree, just BA+ tesol diploma and i make 15k a month in a small city (similar in size to zhuhai). my bills/rent/expenses come to about 2k per month, so it's not impossible for one to make a good living over here. I ride my bike everywhere, so no transport costs besides the price of purchasing the bike.

I have friends in Suzhou who worked at the international schools there who made 30k- these people had BAEd+ tesol diplomas and relevant teaching experience in their home countries. With the school fees the parents are paying to send their kids these days, they can afford to pay teachers a high salary.

Hi Kiran,

I will use your name DIRECTLY this time as I did NOT personally attack you and did NOT direct my comments to you at all! Had you paid proper attention you would have noticed my comments were directed at Alastair, NOT you!

Glad to hear you are doing so well but please get off your high horse and step back a moment. NO ONE called you a liar and I am offended you would accuse me as saying so. If you follow my posts back 8 YEARS you will see I have been nothing but helpful and actually helped dozens of TESOL grads land work here, in fact the last 2 grads I helped are right here in SZ with me now, happily teaching along side me in the same company. Global TESOL has in fact given me free levels based on all the assistance I have given people. I tell people what they should expect, NOT what they should dream about.

Glad to hear you are doing so well for yourself and your friends who have found dream jobs. I never said they didn't exist, just that I had NEVER heard of anyone having such a high paying job as a teacher in China. And I have been here more than 8 years.

Please keep your baseless accusations to yourself or I will be forced to bring your comments to the attention of Global TESOL.

Anthony,

Im sorry, but i took this portion of your reply -

"Watch what you hear and read about online!!! I have NEVER known a teacher in ANY city, big or small making 30K RMB!! NEVER!!! And I have been here (In Shenzhen) almost a DECADE!!!" -
to be a personally aimed at my post which directly relates to the above comment made by you.

I am not on a high horse, actually i am just trying to do the same as you, and give information to people who are trying to start out. Sure, i havent been here for half the time you have (2.5 years for me), but I was in the same boat as these people as well and I was just giving (to the best of my knowedge) advice where i thought i could help out.
I apologize if our wires crossed, i understand that you might know more about all this than me, but it doesnt hurt to have more than one opinion on here.
Kiran

No harm no foul. I just want people to understand what they are getting into. I hate the thought of people thinking they can make almost half a million RMB as teachers here, especially if they are new. It is simply not realistic, regardless of experience.

Of course I have found that market myself and am doing well, but I also know MOST new grads look for jobs online and the really good opportunities online run around 4-10K maximum, the better deals only found once people arrive, get some experience and make local contacts. I started in China on 4K a month and it took me 4 years to find a "good job" which would never have been offered online. Had I not had a local recruiter helping me, I would never even have found that.

I prefer to tell new grads to find a job in a city that interests them, regardless of the salary, come over first and get that all important experience and THEN look for the dream jobs. They do exist, but I have never seen such an offering online.

I have had to explain to many many grads over the years that offers of 4-6K are perfectly normal to start off with, and that once here, with private students and the contacts you eventually make, the skies the limit.

But if you look at the Global TESOL students themselves, many many look online for jobs see the low salaries, especially when compared to their home countries, they get discouraged, and never leave home. Such a pity. I like to paint a more realistic picture so grads know that even though they may have to start with a lower salary, once they arrive and get some "China Time" under their belts, the sky is the limit. However if they wait at home, endlessly scouring the net for 30K jobs, they may never pack a suitcase.....
