Resume reviewing, is it part of your service or out of good will?

Hi,

I am just wondering if resume reviewing is part of your service or it is out of goodwill to help students? The reason why I asked is that because when I was attending the foundation course in class, the instructor indicated repeatedly that we can bring in our resume anytime and he or the office staff would review it for us.

Thanks,

Yvonne
Resume writing is part of the course and resumes, along with employment contracts are noted in the Employment Handbook provided to all students. I request that students in my class email resumes to me rather than bring in hard copies so that I may review and comment via email. After there are revisions made, if any, the student re-sends the final version along with a picture, and I at times forward the resumes to select employers. The service by the instructor does not go on forever as it is part of the course during the time of the delivery of the course. The Academic Dept also reviews resumes when assisting applicants with job placements but the primary work of resume preparation should take place during the course.
Thank you Jim, I should of asked for your help instead! When I took the foundation course, we didn't have enough time to write resume in class, so, the instructor asked us to review the handbook ourselves and hand it in to review it afterwards. I spent the next year completing the rest of the courses, and now, I've obtained the diploma. I saw a job I wanted to apply in March of this year and I called the Edmonton office to see how I can get my resume reviewed. The person on the phone asked me to email the resume to Miss "A", as she is the only one who does it, he also indicated that it will take a week or so. On March 8, I emailed in my resume. I waited till March 23 before I send in another email enquiring about the situation. On March 28, I called in to the Edmonton office wondering when I can get it reviewed. The receptionist was not too friendly, he indicated that Miss "A" is away and she is very busy. He said that she has 517 student profiles, I cannot expect her to answer to all of them. At that time, I thought to myself, does all her 517 student profiles emailed to her at the same time? I've waited 20 days before I called in, it is unresonable? If it is too much for them to handle a review of resume, why didn't he mentioned it when I called in in the beginning of March? After I indicated to him that I will miss my deadline for applying a job (which I did, after all this hassle), he said that he'll emailed her himself to see if she can reply me. I also asked if the Toronto's office can help, he indicated that the Toronto's office only do administrative work. She did reply on the next day, however, the email basically asked me to study and followed the handbook! She made two other points though, first, my objective is too impersonal, second, don't put online education in the resume as some schools don't accept it (by this, she means my master degree, not tesol of course). As you can all see, I was kind of lost still, so I emailed her right away to see if I can make an appointment with her to review my resume after I revised it. Of course, no reply. On April 12, I send an email to Miss "A" of my revised resume and asked for an appointment again. And of course, no reply. A week passed, I went to the office and then, I found out that it was closed. Later on through the forums, I found out that the new office will be opening on May 5. I spend some money and asked some professional to reviewed my revised copy and applied for another job. I got a reply right away and they request a copy of my tesol transcript. So, on April 22, I called in to the Edmonton office again to see if I can get a copy of my transcipt. The same guy answered the phone and indicated that only the foundation course is available with a fee. That was not much help because I got a diploma and that's 5 morese courses. I said "no, that's okay" as I want to hang up the phone, he then asked for my name, I told him my first name and then, he asked me for my last name. I said " why, are you guys inviting the students for the opening of the new office?". He rudely said, "no, you are calling a business, of course I can asked for your last name" and with a softer voice, but I can still hear it very clearly, " what the hell". At that point, I got really mad after what I have been through and I hanged up the phone. Today is April 29, of course, Miss "A" still haven't replied my email. My suggestion to the Edmonton's office is a: hired more staff so that they can return all 517 emails or b: change receptionist and/or c: have a course for staff called "telephone manners".
