Hi Cara! I have spent some time in Colombia and have a friend who grew up in Bucaramanga. She now lives in Panama. Personally, I never went to Bucaramanga but she told me that Bucaramanga is a traditional Colombian town ... no McDonald's and other North American fast food chains. You will also be limited to where you can teach but I would look into teaching at the local grade schools when you arrive. It's a beautiful place from what I've been told but I never had time to go there. I spent most of my time in Bogota, Cartagena, and Barranquilla.
Check out Dave's ESL Cafe (www.eslcafe.com). There is a forum for South America on there with knowledgeable people and teachers living and working in Colombia. They are very helpful and will steer you in the right direction. If you were going to Cartagena I could help you. BTW, Bucaramanga is a safe place. I know Colombia still has a stigma attached to it. Just be yourself and be respectful and you will be fine. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about Colombia : haole93@yahoo.com.
